López Obrador welcomes the Argentine president to Mexico

Mexico, Feb 22 (EFE) .- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, welcomed his Argentine counterpart Alberto Fernández to the country on Monday, who landed minutes before for a state visit that includes the commemoration of the 200 years of Mexican independence. “I want to welcome President Alberto Fernández, who arrived very early. He is our special guest for the ceremony to commemorate the 200 years of the proclamation of the Plan of Iguala. He will accompany us in Iguala on Wednesday,” López Obrador said in his morning press conference at the National Palace. Fernández landed at 06:40 local time (12:40 GMT) at the Mexico City International Airport, where he was received by the Secretary of Foreign Relations of Mexico, Marcelo Ebrard, and the Argentine ambassador to that country, Carlos Tomada. López Obrador explained that the Argentine president will visit this Monday “a laboratory where AstraZeneca vaccines are being packaged,” the result of an agreement between the British pharmaceutical company, Mexico, Argentina and the Carlos Slim Foundation. He also assured that Fernández will accompany him at the morning press conference on Tuesday. “I invited him and he agreed to be at this conference. He will accompany us in the morning tomorrow,” he explained. It will not be the first time that the two meet, as Alberto Fernández visited Mexico in November 2019 as president-elect, a few weeks after his inauguration. At that time, Fernández proposed to López Obrador to build a Latin American “progressive axis,” an initiative that was not received with as much enthusiasm by the Mexican president. However, both countries have cooperated in different areas such as the agreement to produce and distribute the vaccine between AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford in Latin America or in the foundation of the Latin American and Caribbean Space Agency (ALCE). This Monday, Fernández will meet with Mexican businessmen with investments in Argentina and in the afternoon he will visit, together with Ebrard and the Argentine Foreign Minister, Felipe Solá, the plant of the Mexican Liomont laboratory in Ocoyoacac, a municipality of the State of Mexico and practically a neighbor of the capital. , where AstraZeneca vaccines are packed. On Tuesday, Alberto Fernández, from the Peronist Frente de Todos, the ruling coalition, will go to the National Palace for a press conference and working meeting with López Obrador. In the early hours of the afternoon, Fernández will meet with Carlos Slim, a Mexican magnate who, from his own foundation, has promoted the manufacture and distribution of the vaccine against covid-19 between Argentina and Mexico. He will also meet with other businessmen and with the Mayor of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, who will name him “distinguished guest”, and will participate in a ceremony in the Senate. On Wednesday afternoon, Fernández will be with his Mexican counterpart at the commemoration ceremony of the bicentennial of the Plan of Iguala, an event that laid the foundations for declaring independence from Spain, and the celebrations of Flag Day.
