A real lesson in realism. Dominic Thiem mastered Daniil Medvededv’s game in the US Open semifinals. The Austrian was impressive.
And four. For the fourth time in his career Dominic Thiem will play a Grand Slam final. This was doubly the case at Roland Garros (2018 and 2019), then in Australia at the start of the year. And here is the Austrian again qualified for a final of a Major. Consistency at the highest level that will eventually pay off.
And it is all the more remarkable that Daniil Medvedev also arrived in great shape and full of desire to join a final he had already tasted in New York a year earlier. But the Russian fell on a bone. Thiem indeed took the lead in the first set, going from 2-2 to 6-2 to complete the first set.
A good introduction which did not cut the legs of the Russian capable of breaking the start in the second set to lead 2-0 then 5-3 and serve at 5-4 … But Thiem came back and it was decisive game that everything was played. And there again, Medvedev will have regrets since he obtained two set points at 6-5 and 7-6 before losing 9-7.
A Thiem-Zverev final
And rebel in the last round with a Medvedev who takes off entry with a break to escape 3-0. But at 5-2, again the blow of the breakdown despite, once again, a set point at 5-3. And this time in the decisive game, it was Thiem who took the lead (3-0) before closing the case 7 points to 5.
A final victory in three sets (6-2, 7-6, 7-6) which says a lot about the steel mind of Dominic Thiem who will face a stunning Alexander Zverev in the final.
