The participation of a team made up of Swedish university students from the Erasmus program and another mixed one, which brings together students from the United States, Canada and Finland in Logroño together with young people from the Rioja youth academy is the great novelty of the Spanish Ice Hockey League that begins this week, with eight outfits.
FC Barcelona, Puigcerdá (Catalonia), Jaca (Aragon), Txuri Urdin (Basque Country), Majadahonda (Madrid), Huarte (Navarra), Nordic Vikings (Madrid) and Milenio (La Rioja) are the teams that will fight for the Spanish ice hockey men’s competition.
The last three are the “new” this year and, of these, the Nordic Vikings and the Millennium Panthers They are the great novelties and they present themselves as the “animators” of the competition and the teams called to raise the level of the League.
The Nordic Vikings, based in Majadahonda, will be made up of university players from Sweden, who have come to Spain on an Erasmus program and who come from the hockey leagues of their country, thanks to an agreement between the Spanish and Swedish federations.
To give entry to this team, the Federation has changed the League statutes, with the aim of allowing the presence of more foreigners than the three that each team can include, and the exception has also been established that they will not be able to opt for the title, so he will not play the final phase; also will not participate in the Cup.
In a similar situation is the Millennium Panthers of Logroño, which returns to the top Spanish competition with a “mixed” squad between Spanish players and other young students from the United States, Canada and Finland.
The Riojan team has wanted to give an exit to its quarry players And for this it has started a project, with the permission of the Federation, in which, together with its players, it will have university students from countries where hockey is more developed, they will carry out a mixed program of studies and sports.
In addition, he has opted to hire a Finnish coach, who will bring the vision of a more professional hockey to try to “cheer up” the League.
However, the Rioja team will not be able to make their debut in the Spanish League for a few weeks, as they cannot have an ice rink until October, so until then it will not be possible to verify the full incidence of the two “international” teams in the tournament.
This week also begins the Iberdrola Ice Hockey League, in which Majadahonda, Valdemoro (Madrid), Jaca (Aragón), Huarte (Navarra), Alhambra (Granada), Puigcerdá (Catalonia) and Milenio (Logroño) will participate.
The two leagues begin this weekend and will continue, in their regular phase, until the end of February, from when the phase for the title and the Cup will be held.
