The number of Americans seeking unemployment help skyrocketed to 965,000 last week, a historically high number that points to a weak job market held back by the viral pandemic.

This is the worst figure recorded since August.
Thursday’s figure from the Labor Department, an increase of 181,000 applications from the previous week, shows that even with the pandemic recession in its 10th month, many companies are still laying off workers. Before the recession, weekly jobless claims generally hovered around 225,000.
