The summer transfer market has once again been monopolized by the Premier League, as it happened last season. Despite the economic needs derived from Covid-19, British teams have once again exhibited their financial muscle and dominate the top four: Arsenal, Manchester United, Manchester City and Chelsea have been the clubs that have spent the most.
In fact, the top six include a total of five English teams: Arsenal (€ 165.60M), Manchester United (€ 140M), Manchester City (€ 127.50M), Chelsea (€ 120M), Leipzig (€ 107.62M) and Aston Villa (€ 99.82M). The top 10 is completed by AS Roma (€ 97.75M), PSG (€ 83M), Stade Rennais (€ 79.50M) and Atlético de Madrid (€ 75M), according to Transfermarkt.
To find the next Spanish club on the list we have to go to the 22nd position, occupied by Villarreal de Unai Emey, who has spent a total of 54.50 million euros. A situation that contrasts with British football: of the top 20, more than half (11) are in the Premier League. West Ham, Crystal Palace, Leicester, Tottenham, Norwich and Leeds United belong to the list.
Bundesliga and LaLiga, in the queue
Among the teams that have invested the most money in the transfer market there is not a great presence of LaLiga or the Bundesliga: only Atlético de Madrid, from Spanish football, and Leipzig and Bayern, from German, are among the top 20 in the ranking.
Ligue 1 has three teams (PSG, Stade Rennais and Olympique Marsella), Serie A another three (AS Roma, AC Milan and Atalanta), the Bundesliga is left with two (Leipzig and Bayern) and LaLiga only one, Atlético from Madrid.
