According to the independent count of NBC News, this Tuesday at 2:30 a.m. ET, 15,037,383 infections and 284,911 deaths were reported in the US.
The situation is such that the coronavirus was the number one cause of death in the country the week after Thanksgiving, according to the Institute for Metrics and Evaluations at the University of Washington. Nearly 12,000 people died from COVID-19 in the past week, when millions of people ignored expert advice to refrain from traveling.
In addition to the increase, the shortage of supplies and the lack of availability of beds in US hospitals endanger the continuity of the private health system in the country, according to experts.
“In the northern region of the country there are a handful of beds left, they are building field hospitals in parks and soccer fields,” said Jeffrey E. Harris, professor of economics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and an internist at the General Hospital of Massachusetts
“The health system has assumed the dominant role, in the United States we have seen a failure of the private sector, which will take us to its own funeral,” added the expert.
