In 2005 he was born google maps, a map application server on the web. Following his path, but not only in space, but in time, he arrived Hispanic History portal. It’s a nifty way of showing what happened at a certain time, based on location.
Created by the Royal Academy of History (RAH), This historical Google Maps of Spain takes us on a journey through time. An interactive map gives details on more than 20,000 events from the Hispanic past.
“The Royal Academy of History shows the geopositioning of the events and characters of Hispanic History with nearly 150,000 geographical references,” the institution indicates on the portal.
“These geolocations, which extend throughout the world, indicate the places of activity of more than 50,000 characters and the location of more than 20,000 events in our history, from the year 1,350,000 BC to the present, with special attention to all the territories that formed part of the Spanish Administration”.
This is how Google Maps of the history of Spain works
The presentation of Historia Hispánica took place on March 1, with the presence of the kings of Spain, Felipe and Letizia.
The map has a simple search box, where you can search for place names (proper names of places) historical or present, as well as personalities.
To manage the information on the portal, the RAH worked with the Electronic Biographical Dictionary and the Chronological Atlas of the History of Spain. The academics Juan Pablo Fusi, Octavio Ruiz-Manjón and Enrique Moradiellos were appointed to work with the most recent facts.
“All the contents are linked to each other through an exhaustive system of direct and indirect links”, indicates the RAH, “which establish a network of relationships between them that has never been shown before, and which contextualize events and historical figures synchronously and diachronically”.
The only thing missing is the DeLorean from Back to the Future to be able to travel in time: the Spanish historical Google Maps will give us the coordinates to do so.
