New York (CNN Business) – TikTok has reached one of the most unique milestones in the tech industry.
The company said in a blog this Monday that it now has more than 1 billion monthly active users around the world, which makes it a rare case, as it is a social network that is not owned by Facebook or Google and declares an audience of that size.
The popularity of the short video app increased as people spent more time on their phones during the pandemic. It has also benefited and fueled the growth of the creator industry, as more and more people seek to earn a living by posting content on social media.
The growth of the Chinese-owned app comes despite the administration of former President Donald Trump last year trying to shut down TikTok in the United States. And while Trump’s attempt ultimately failed, the app has been banned in India and faces scrutiny from European regulators over its data protection practices and the safety of children.

TikTok has also maintained its popularity despite rivals launching copycat products such as Instagram Reels, YouTube Shorts, and Snapchat Spotlight.
Strong monthly increase of TikTok
Monthly active users of the app in August increased 25% compared to the same month last year, according to app store intelligence company Sensor Tower.
The announcement consolidates TikTok’s place among the competitive lists of social media platforms such as Facebook, YouTube and Instagram, owned by Facebook, the latter reaching 1 billion monthly users in June 2018.
Instead, Snapchat, which has been around for almost twice as long, said earlier this year that it had hit 500 million monthly active users. When Twitter last reported this metric in 2019, it had 330 million monthly active users.
During the pandemic, TikTok managed to attract more millennials and high-profile creators from Instagram and other sites. It also launched a $ 1 billion creators fund last year to encourage users to create content on the platform.
