President Donald Trump issued an order on Friday seeking to force General Motors to produce artificial respirators for patients with coronavirus, in accordance with the Defense Production Act.
Trump said negotiations with GM had been productive, “but our fight against the virus is too urgent to allow the give and take of the contract process to continue its normal course.”
Trump said “GM was wasting time” and that his actions will help ensure the rapid production of respirators that will save American lives.
Experts say the United States has hundreds of thousands of fewer artificial respirators than it will need to treat the growing number of patients with COVID-19. New York, Michigan, Louisiana, and Washington state have reported infectious outbreaks in the United States.
