A fire that broke out on Saturday afternoon near Saint-Marcel-lès-Annonay, in Ardèche, was “fixed” in the evening, after having destroyed 70 hectares of forest, said the prefecture. The fire mobilized some 300 firefighters, supported by four Canadair. Some 70 hectares of forest were destroyed and 15 homes evacuated in the early evening “as a preventive measure because of the smoke,” the Ardèche prefecture told .. The evacuated residents were able to return to their homes around 9 p.m.
Firefighters from Ardèche, Loire and Drôme have been fighting the flames since the beginning of the afternoon. The fire being “fixed”, firefighters will nevertheless stay all night on the scene to treat the hot spots, added the prefecture.
The disaster is probably due to the high temperatures and the drought that reign in this department, still placed in orange heat wave vigilance by Météo France.
For the first time this year, the Ardèche prefecture has activated the “Alarm plan” which further strengthens the means of surveillance in order to detect emerging fires, she added.
Several fires started on Saturday evening, without causing damage, caused by thunderstorms which hit the department.
