Oscar winner Charlize Theron appears to be very comfortable in her role as an acclaimed action star. This week she admitted on Twitter that she would be willing to star in a version of Die Hard with a lesbian as the lead. The comment was part of a public conversation that arose from a fan Tweet. The same one who praised her performance in the recent Hulu Christmas movie Queer Happiest Season.
When asked if there could be a lesbian version of Die Hard starring the actress, Theron immediately replied that the idea would excite him. “Where do I sign?” tweeted.

Theron, who has a wide selection of dramatic roles and won the Oscar in 2003 for his performance in the Patty Jenkins film Monster, has devoted much of his attention over the past decade to action films. From the iconic Mad Max: Fury Road, Atomic Blonde to the possible The Old Guard saga, Theron seems to have an affinity for storylines with strong and capable protagonists.
His interest in starring in a new version of the action classic has not surprised. This time as a concerned heroine trying to save his wife from the hijacking of a business building.
The mighty Theron in ‘Die Hard’
The Twitter conversation came as a direct consequence of Theron’s recent interview with Happiest Season actress Mackenzie Davis about the film’s portrayal of the queer community and its impact, Interview commented.
“You’re right,” he agreed with Davis about the lack of queer roles in television and film. “There is a total lack of opportunities, so I respect that space (for community actors). But I (also) find that almost an insult. I feel that a good actor is a good actor. Although I can’t wait for non-binary or queer actors to see the matter in the same way as we hetero-cis actors do ”.
The conversation was so fluid that it opened a frank debate on Twitter about the representativeness of minorities. Actress Hannah Simone saw one of the tweets and replied: “Let me know if you need a tired Indian wife who does not like to run fast even when there is danger and therefore would need all the savings.” To which Theron replied, “I have your back!” From there, the conversation turned into a debate between fans that included the tweet with the curious offer.
Of course, for now this is just an online joke. However, it is not entirely unreasonable to think that any Hollywood producer could take the innuendo seriously. After all, the ’98 action movie classic is still as popular as it was on the day it opened. After several sequels and some rumors about a supposed reboot that did not come to fruition, the name of the film has not stopped being in the air as one of the most direct candidates for a possible reboot. Even weeks ago, one of Bruce Willis’s daughters shared a video of just seconds on Twitter in which hinted the long-awaited return of John McClain could occur.
A long journey in this profile
Theron is also no stranger to playing queer roles and has stated in the past that she finds no problem playing roles in the style. The role that won her an Oscar was that of the serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who had Christina Ricci as her co-star, as the criminal’s partner. She also played a bisexual in Tully and 2017’s Atomic Blonde, which featured a fiery sex scene with a deadly partner.
Theron’s most recent starring role was in The Old Guard for Netflix, the Image Comics series adaptation of the same name signed Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernandez. The film focuses on a group of Immortal mercenaries who have a bigger role in the world than they realize.
The film also includes KiKi Layne, Matthias Schoenaerts, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Harry Melling. The Old Guard was a considerable summer hit and a possible sequel is expected sometime in 2021.
