Soon users could download YouTube videos directly from your preferred desktop web browser. Google began testing the feature with a limited number of users in the last few hours. This is a feature similar to the one that already exists in the video service mobile apps, although with its logical differences.
It is worth noting that it is an experimental option, so it is not yet known when it will finally reach the rest of the public. As long as YouTube decides to move forward with its implementation, of course. Users who want to try it must have a YouTube Premium subscription and register on the Labs page.
However, please note that the trial is not available to all users. Those who can access it will find a button to download YouTube videos when playing them from the desktop browser. The only technical requirement to meet is to have the latest versions of Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge or Opera.
YouTube videos could soon be downloaded from the desktop browser
When downloading videos from YouTube, the material is stored in the section “Downloads” that is added to the menu that is displayed from the left side of the screen, and in the chosen quality (although with a maximum of 1080p). All the content that appears in this section remains accessible while the device used connect to the web at least once every 30 days.
The option that exists in the iOS and Android apps to download YouTube videos is similar, but it was designed to provide access to multimedia material when there is no internet connection. It’s basically the same as Spotify and Netflix with their own apps, and the content “disappears” automatically after a month.
In downloading clips from the desktop browser, the end goal seems to be something different. What YouTube would try to achieve here is that users get the content to play later, without being forced to give up some of the available bandwidth. It seems obvious, but it must be clarified that the downloaded videos are visible only from YouTube, and not outside the browser.
The test to download videos from YouTube through a desktop browser will be performed until next October 19.
