In recent years, the DC film universe, better known as the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), has enjoyed a better critical reception than it did with its first three films; one of the highest rated to date is Shazam! – 88%, a film that was not a huge box office success but received approval from critics and fans. Shazam! starred Zachary Levi in the role of the main superhero, and now the actor has revealed his interest in bringing other comic book characters to life.

Previously, Levi was in the role of Fandral in Thor: A Dark World – 66% and in Thor: Ragnarok – 92%, from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but did not have the opportunity to exploit the role properly. Could you get a second chance to be part of that franchise? In the past some actors have repeated with different roles in the MCU, such as Gemma Chan, who appeared in Captain Marvel – 60% as a kree warrior and we will see her as Sersi in Eternals, so for Levi having played a character does not mean that I can’t do it again.
During his time at Dragon Con 2021 (via The Direct), the American actor was questioned about the possibility of embodying another Marvel superhero, and revealed that for years he was interested in giving life to Deadpool, and that he felt jealous for Ryan Reynolds, who starred in Deadpool – 84% and Deadpool – 84%. Levi later added:
Reed Richards would be fun, but to be honest, I don’t even allow myself to think about it because I’m so cool … I’m so well established. The fact that he even gets to be Captain Marvel / Shazam / Billy Batson, it’s a really fun dream role. And it has a very different DNA than almost everyone else [superhéroes] …

A Fantastic Four movie is known to be in development and the actors have yet to be cast, but fans have long been asking for John Krasinski to play Reed Richards / Mr. Fantastic. On the other hand, Marvel doesn’t always cater to fan whims, so there’s a remote chance for Zachary levi, if you are interested in the role, to obtain it.
Meanwhile, he will appear in the sequel to Shazam!, which is titled Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and which will be released in 2023. Before that film, DCEU fans will have Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, The Flash and Black Adam. What seems unlikely for this franchise is that we will see another crossover as ambitious as Zack Snyder’s Justice League was – 82%, because now it seems that each new installment of the DCEU takes a path that moves away from the idea of a shared universe.
Superhero cinema has had a surprising boom so far this century, since the early years with the arrival of the X-Men – 81%, Spider-Man – 89% and Batman Starts – 84% began an era of great successes for Marvel and DC characters mainly. The rise of the Marvel Cinematic Universe with Iron Man – The Iron Man – 93% in 2008 was also a very important moment, but perhaps it had more impact The Avengers – 92% in 2012.
Currently there is a lot of variety, we have at our disposal not only the blockbusters of Marvel and DC, we also have films based on works by other publishers, and series such as The Boys – 90% and Invincible – 100% on Amazon Prime Video, or The Umbrella Academy – 93% on Netflix, have shown great potential to attract audiences. The day does not seem near when people turn their backs on this subgenre of fantasy and science fiction, so fans must be happy.
