The night of the 2021 Emmy Awards was held yesterday, September 19, and social media users were perplexed by an unexpected situation: in the actor categories there were no winners of color, only white people. This fact has angered not a few users of social networks and has triggered comments and criticism regarding the decisions made by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. Despite record-breaking nominations, performers of color have failed to win the coveted awards during the television industry’s most anticipated night.

Although in each acting category of the Emmy Awards 2021 we observed a satisfactory number of stars of color, much higher than in previous years, it is surprising that all the statuettes were in the hands of famous whites. Neither Uzo Aduba, nor Jurnee Smollett-Bell, nor Mj Rodriguez, nor Sterling K. Brown, nor Jonathan Majors, nor Regé-Jean Page, along with the extensive list of nominees of color, were awarded during the ceremony, a fact that has caused annoyance on social networks like Twitter.
Although various talents of color were recognized with creative categories, the winners for best performances were stars such as Gillian Anderson, Olivia Colman, Josh O’Connor, Kate Winslet and Evan Peters. Although last year the triumphs of celebrities such as Zendaya, Regina King and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II were observed, this 2021 we once again notice a trend that of much previous years that does not connect with the visions of diversity and representation that exist today. The Asian-American and Latino community of actors is virtually nonexistent among Emmy nominees.

Diversity has taken on a critical role in the entertainment industry in recent years. More and more television and film productions are placing greater importance on stories acted, written and directed by people of color. African-American, Asian-American or Latino, minority communities in the United States have managed to increase their presence on the scene, strengthening ties within and outside their circles. But although this 2021 was distinguished by the superb number of nominations for actors and actresses of color, the unpleasant reality is that none has remained with any of the statuettes.
In social networks, the hashtag #EmmySoWhite has become popular, which openly criticizes the victory of white actors in the most important categories of the ceremony. The amount of tweets in protest is immeasurable, a fact that the Academy in charge of distributing the awards will surely notice. And you, do you agree with the selection of winners at the Emmy 2021? Here are a series of tweets that use the hashtag #EmmySoWhite:
#Emmys parading people of color around the stage like minstrels to entertain white people … only recognizing 2 in almost 3 hours.

So all the black / POC nominations at the #Emmys were just to avoid the #EmmySoWhite hashtag beforehand… I got it.

All amazing talented actors of color and there were no winners in the main categories. Emmy, you should be ashamed of yourself … Then again, why am I not surprised?

Actors of color are rewarded for our work. We have to work ten times harder, even to have a seat at the table. God forbid we want to be rewarded for it. Anyway #EmmySoWhite and # Emmys2021 make it better.

Year after year, the awards show begins and then ends, and you are left with the rage. I think it’s time to stop watching awards shows.

I wonder what the ratings of the #EmmySoWhite winners will be tonight. Is #TheCrown and #TheHacks #TheHandmaidsTale the only original programming worthy of achievement?
